Books have a powerful symbolism. They communicate ideas, knowledge, wisdom, history, experience.
We value them for the way in which they can help us to make sense of the world or create imaginary worlds.
The books in the exhibition have sculptural qualities. They have an ancient physicality, seemingly from
another time and place and they smell of paint earth and varnish. Pages ask to be turned but some of the
books are bound shut with their contents locked away. Others can be handled and explored but they hold
an enigma between their double pages and in their closed boxes.
When their surfaces do crackle open they reveal unexpected juxtapositions, glimpsed fragments,
a sense of power, combined with great vulnerability.
A strata of secrets, of which we know nothing...or do we?
